From July, motorway tolls will increase in Croatia.

June 29, 2024

The seasonal tariffs on Croatian highways were introduced in 2017 and will be in effect again this year after not being applied for the past four years due to the coronavirus pandemic and the economic crisis. The aim of introducing seasonal highway tolls is to manage the summer traffic and cover the increased maintenance, safety, and traffic management costs.

Until September 30, seasonal tolls will be ten percent higher than usual. These tariffs do not apply to heavy vehicles, buses, and trucks, but are applicable to other vehicle categories. According to the statement from HAC, the company managing Croatian highways, about forty percent of the total annual traffic is concentrated in the summer months, which is why costs also increase significantly during this period.

Drivers can acquire various discounts by using an electronic ENC device, which provides a 21 percent discount in the season and a 33 percent discount off-season. The ENC devices can be purchased at the offices next to the toll gates for 15 euros. These devices can be topped up with cash, and any amount can be added, which can even be used in the following year.

By using the ENC, drivers can avoid queues at cash toll gates, as they can proceed within minutes at the gates marked ENC. Drivers only need to hold the box near the windshield when approaching the barrier; the device will beep, and the gate will open. When exiting the highway, the next ENC gate registers the exit and deducts the toll amount from the device. The current balance then appears on the display.
